Academic entry requirement:

A minimum of a 2.1 Honours degree in any discipline. NB: We do not consider applicants offering 2(ii) for this course even if they possess a Masters degree or PhD

A-level applicants

AAA including Chemistry and/or Biology at A or AS level and excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking. If only one of Biology and/or Chemistry is offered at A or AS level, the other should be offered at GCSE grade A (or Dual Award Science grade A).

International Baccalaureate

For applicants offering International Baccalaureate qualifications we require a minimum of 38 points including grade 5 in all subjects with Higher Level grade 6 in Chemistry or Biology. Combinations including two Sciences, Mathematics and English are desirable.

Scottish Highers

For applicants offering Scottish Highers, the requirement is AAAAA at Higher Grade including Chemistry and/or Biology.

Irish Leaving Certificate

For applicants offering the Irish Leaving Certificate, the requirement is A1A1A1AAA at Higher Level, including Chemistry and Biology. Physics and English Language required at Ordinary Level, if not offered at Higher Level.

Cambridge Pre-U

For applicants offering the Cambridge Pre-University certificate, the requirement is D3,D3,D3. Subjects should include Chemistry and/or Biology as principal subjects. If only one of Biology and/or Chemistry is offered as a principal subject, the other should be offered at GCSE grade A (or Dual Award Science grade A).

Welsh Baccalaureate

Applicants must pass the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma and take the Option to sit 2 additional A levels to grade 'A'. Desirable A levels subjects include: Chemistry, Biology, Maths or Physics

European Baccalaureate

Chemistry and one further science subject, with an overall pass at 90%

French Baccalaureate

A minimum score of 15 is required

Access to Medicine

For applicants offering Access to HE courses, modules in Biological Sciences and Chemistry and Quantitative Methods are essential (at Distinction grade for HEFC). For applicants offering Access to Medicine courses, Distinctions in all units/modules are required. Acceptable courses are those offered by Sussex Downs College, Norwich College, West Anglia, MANCAT and Durham University.

BTEC Higher National Diploma

BTEC Higher National Diploma (NQF Level 5) in a science-related subject with Distinction grades in all subjects

Open University Qualifications

Compulsory subjects are:

  • S104 Exploring Science (60pts)
  • SK277 Human Biology level 2 (30pts)
  • PLUS Another 30 pts course would need to be sat to bring up the points to 120

for example : K260 - Death and dying (30 credits - Level 2) or SD226 -Biological psychology: exploring the brain (30 credits - Level 2)

Course Structure:

Our curriculum is organised into modular units of study called Strands. Each relates to a system of the body, the life cycle, personal and professional development or to community aspects of medicine. Much of our learning process is designed to be "case-led". This approach involves presentation of a patient case at the beginning of the topic in question, and may be followed by group discussion, then teaching and learning sessions revolve around the case. Cases chosen reflect the range of presentations and conditions which you will encounter in your future career, and you will come into early contact with patients through hospital and general practice visits. This approach stimulates active, curiosity-driven learning, leading you to learn the basic sciences and apply your knowledge to clinical scenarios.

Each Strand is delivered by an interdisciplinary teaching team, made up of academic, clinical and other professional staff drawn from the health, education and social welfare fields.

Assessment

Assessment is both formative and summative using a range of assessment strategies. To be a good doctor, you need to know the right things, be able to do the right things and be the right kind of person - a caring and skilled communicator. The assessment process measures these things first in order to give you feedback on how you are doing, and to recognise your achievement you as you go through the various stages of the course.

Phase II

Regardless of whether you spent Phase I at Durham University or at Newcastle, all students are integrated into a single common pathway for the three years of Phase II training, delivered by Newcastle in partnership with the NHS.
